What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is an oral surgery that’s used to prepare your jaw bone for dental implants. In a bone graft, Dr. Keith Luminais will create an opening in your gums and jaw bone. Then, your dentist will place a special type of bone powder in this opening and suture it shut.

Over time, natural bone material heals over this powder, strengthening your jaw bone sufficiently to accommodate a dental implant. Thanks to bone grafts, it’s possible for most patients to get dental implants to replace missing teeth, even if they have suffered extensive jaw bone loss due to chronic oral health issues. Healing and recovery

You’ll be sent home to recover after your treatment. Initial recovery takes a week or two, but it may take three months or longer for your natural jaw bone to grow around the bone graft. You’ll come back to our office for periodic checkups to make sure your recovery is on track.

Implant placement

Once your mouth is fully healed, you’ll begin the dental implant placement process. It can take up to six months to get your dental implants, but once you have your implants, you’ll be able to keep them for the rest of your life as long as you take proper care of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

While bone grafting is a safe and effective procedure, it may not be suitable for everyone. Certain medical conditions or lifestyle factors, such as uncontrolled diabetes or smoking, can affect the success of the graft. During your consultation at Brightly Dental, Dr. Keith Luminais will evaluate your medical history and current oral health to determine if bone grafting is the right option for you.

The recovery time after a bone graft can vary depending on the individual case and the extent of the procedure. Typically, the initial healing phase, where the surgical site heals and discomfort subsides, takes a few weeks. However, the complete integration of the graft with your natural bone can take several months. During this time, it's essential to follow post-operative care instructions and attend follow-up appointments for optimal healing.

While bone grafting might seem daunting, it is a routine procedure performed under anesthesia, ensuring a pain-free experience during the surgery. Post-operative discomfort is normal but is usually manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers. At Brightly Dental, patient comfort is our priority, and we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care, including thorough aftercare instructions and pain management strategies.

At Brightly Dental, Dr. Keith Luminais and his team perform bone grafting with expertise and precision. The procedure involves the following steps:

  1. Placement of Grafting Material: The bone graft material, which may be sourced from your own body (autograft), a donor (allograft), or made of synthetic materials (alloplast), is placed in the area where bone regeneration is needed.
  2. Stimulating New Bone Growth: The graft material acts as a scaffold for new bone growth. Over time, it encourages the regeneration of your own bone, strengthening the area where the graft is placed.
  3. Integration with Existing Bone: The new bone growth gradually integrates with your existing bone structure, forming a strong foundation for future dental work, such as implants.

Bone grafting is a specialized surgical procedure utilized in various medical fields, including dentistry. In the context of oral health, it involves transplanting bone tissue to repair or rebuild bones and joints. This procedure is critical in dentistry for several reasons:

Restoring Jaw Bone Density: Bone loss can occur due to periodontal disease, trauma, or tooth extraction. Bone grafting helps in restoring the strength and density of the jawbone.

Preparation for Dental Implants: For successful dental implant surgery, having a sufficient amount of healthy jawbone is essential. If your jawbone is too soft or not thick enough, bone grafting may be required to create a solid base for the implants.
