Dental Crowns in Bogalusa

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are made of durable porcelain materials, and are designed to cover your entire tooth after it’s been trimmed. They're sometimes called “caps” because they cap and cover your entire tooth structure. Because crowns cover up your tooth all the way to the gum line, they provide excellent protection.

Preparing your tooth

To begin the process, Dr. Luminais will clean the treatment area, and then numb your mouth. Once your mouth is numb, your dentist will use a dental drill to trim away any damaged or decayed tooth material. Then, they will continue trimming your tooth to prepare it for your crown.

Crafting your dental crown

Once your tooth has been trimmed, your dentist will take impressions and images of your teeth. These will be sent to a dental lab, where a crown will be built to match your natural teeth. Dr. Luminais will attach a temporary crown to your tooth, then send you home.

Final crown placement

It may take a few weeks for us to get your final dental crown. Once we do, you’ll come back to Brightly Dental for another appointment. Your dentist will remove your temporary crown, clean the area, then attach your permanent crown with dental cement. After one final polishing, you’ll be sent home to enjoy your newly-restored tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Brightly Dental, we offer a variety of dental crown options to suit the unique needs and preferences of our patients. This includes crowns made of metal (such as stainless steel, gold, or another alloy), porcelain fused to metal, resin, or porcelain ceramic. Dr. Luminais will work with you to determine which type of crown is best for your specific situation, taking into account the tooth's location, the color of the surrounding teeth, the function of the tooth that needs the crown, and your personal preferences.

The lifespan of a dental crown depends on the amount of wear and tear the crown is exposed to, as well as your personal mouth-related habits, and how well you maintain your oral hygiene. On average, dental crowns last between 5 and 15 years. However, with good oral hygiene practices and regular dental visits, they can last even longer.

The process for getting a dental crown typically involves two visits to our Bogalusa, LA office. During the first visit, Dr. Luminais will examine the tooth and prepare it for the crown. This may involve reshaping the tooth along the chewing surface and sides to make room for the crown. If the tooth is severely damaged or broken, the doctor may need to fill it in to ensure it can support the crown. After the tooth is prepared, Dr. Luminais will take an impression of the tooth and the surrounding teeth, which will be used to custom-make your dental crown. A temporary crown will be put in place to protect the prepared tooth while the permanent crown is being made. During the second visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is cemented onto the tooth.

Dental crowns, also known as "caps," are a type of dental restoration that completely cover a tooth or dental implant. They are typically used when a tooth has been damaged or decayed to the point where fillings aren't able to repair the problem. The crown restores the tooth's shape, size, strength, and appearance. Dr. Keith Luminais at Brightly Dental in Bogalusa, LA, may recommend a dental crown for a variety of reasons, such as to protect a weak tooth, restore a broken or severely worn down tooth, cover and support a tooth with a large filling, hold a dental bridge in place, cover a dental implant, or for cosmetic modifications.

You can expect a dental crown to last at least 15 years with proper care, and it’s not uncommon for patients to keep a crown for 20+ years. Our lab-made crowns are very strong and durable, and hold up well to the wear and tear of biting and chewing.

If you want to make sure your crown lasts as long as possible, the best thing to do is to maintain good oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day and flossing once per day keeps your natural teeth and your crown in good shape. Also, make sure to visit Dr. Luminais and our team every six months for preventive care! Teeth cleanings and oral exams help ensure that your mouth is healthy, and allow our team to catch any potential issues early.
