Before you can get dentures, Dr. Luminais will assess your oral health. Then, our team will recommend any necessary tooth extractions or other treatments that you may need before you get your new teeth.
After any necessary preparatory treatments, you’ll come into our office for a denture fitting appointment. Your dentist will take impressions of your smile, take measurements of your mouth and teeth, and create a detailed bite mold. This information will be sent to a dental lab, where a set of wax test dentures will be made.
Once your test dentures have been built and sent to our office, you’ll come back to Brightly Dental to try them out. You can give your dentist feedback about how they look and feel, and your dentist will take measurements and assess the test dentures to see if any changes need to be made. Then, a new set of test dentures will be built to these new specifications.
You’ll continue the denture try-in process until your dentures fit perfectly. Then, your dentist will order your permanent set of dentures, and you’ll come in for one last appointment at Brightly Dental. You’ll pick up your new teeth, and Dr. Luminais will give you some information on how to care for your dentures and your mouth. Then, you can go home and enjoy your new smile.
Proper care can help your dentures last longer and remain comfortable. Here are some tips:
1. Clean your dentures daily: Just like natural teeth, dentures need to be cleaned every day. Use a soft denture brush and non-abrasive denture cleanser to remove food particles and plaque.
2. Handle with care: Dentures are delicate and can break easily. When handling your dentures, stand over a folded towel or a sink full of water to avoid damage if you drop them.
3. Protect from drying out: When not wearing your dentures, place them in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in plain water to keep them from drying out.
4. Regular check-ups: Visit Dr. Luminais at Brightly Dental regularly to ensure your dentures are in good condition and continue to fit properly.
Remember, dentures are not a one-size-fits-all solution. It's important to consult with a dental professional like Dr. Luminais to find the best solution for your dental needs. At Brightly Dental, we're here to help you smile brightly again.
With diligent at-home cleansing care and protective storage, a well-fitted set of complete dentures generally lasts 5-10 years before requiring replacement or extensive repairs from routine wear-and-tear cracks, decay, or fit changes. However, significant fluctuations in oral tissue shape, bone loss, dental misalignment, or lifestyle factors like smoking can necessitate remaking appliances sooner, around every 5-7 years on average. Attending regular dental checkups allows monitoring and realigning dentures optimally to help maximize durability. But material integrity, adhesive seal performance, and oral health evolve gradually over time, making periodic denture replacement a reality to expect.
While today's dentures have reached new comfort and function levels, they cannot fully replicate the sensation or performance of strong natural teeth rooted firmly into the jawbone. Most wearers require an initial adjustment period as mouth muscles strengthen and adapt to the appliance. Careful use coupled with relearning proper chewing motions and denture adhesive application in time enables enjoyable eating and speaking without impedance. But balanced understanding of strengths and limitations remains key when considering denture lifestyle factors.
Dentures consist of a gum-colored acrylic base that covers the gingiva and palate, providing foundational structure that houses prosthetic teeth. The teeth consist of plastic or porcelain materials carefully shaded and contoured to realistically resemble natural tooth anatomy, colors, and textures for a bright, seamless smile. Denture bases get custom molded from detailed oral impressions to match individual mouths. Skilled technicians hand-articulate and set the prosthetic teeth into wax trial dentures for shape and shade approvals before finalizing the restoration.
