Also known as laughing gas, this is a mild and very safe sedative that is inhaled through the nose and has a quick onset. It only takes a few minutes for the effects like euphoria, relaxation, and a sense of calm to wash over you.
Likewise, once we remove the nasal mask, it only takes a couple of minutes for the sedative to wear off. To prepare for this sedative, you need to fast for 2 hours beforehand. This is the only sedative that doesn’t linger in the body so you can drive home afterward and do not have any limitations.
This is another type of conscious sedation but the level of sedation is moderate. This is ideal for patients getting a routine dental treatment but who have more severe dental anxiety. This sedative is taken orally about an hour before the patient’s appointment.
They are given a medication that is used to treat anxiety in the form of a pill, and usually takes about an hour to kick in. Once it takes effect, patients feel relaxed and sleepy but remain awake and aware of their surroundings. If patients fall asleep, they can be easily woken up. You need to fast for 6 hours before your appointment.
General anesthesia is administered through an IV. This is the deepest form of sedation because it puts a patient into a state of unconsciousness.
Patients will not be aware of their surroundings and will be in a deep sleep in a hospital setting, where every precaution is taken to monitor their vitals and ensure that they have enough oxygen.
Patients will not wake up with a shake because the sedative is very powerful. You will need breathing assistance through a breathing tube. This is often used for invasive treatments like oral surgery so patients don’t need to worry about feeling traumatized or feeling any pain during their procedure.

If you have dental anxiety or are nervous about an invasive dental procedure, sedation can help you feel relaxed and melt away all of your worries. Contact us at Brightly Dental to schedule a consultation with Dr. Keith Luminais.
Dr. Luminais will call you in for a consultation so that they can review your medical history and any medications you are taking. Since safety is our number one priority and not everyone is a good candidate for sedation, this information will help us determine if sedation is right for you.
Different sedatives have different fasting requirements and driving arrangements that need to be made. You will need to fast for 6 hours before receiving IV sedation and you will not be able to drive home so someone needs to take you to and from your appointment.
When you get to our office, we will administer the sedative and within 10 minutes, you will feel the full effects of the sedative. We will then start your dental treatment as you are fully relaxed. We will monitor your vitals during this appointment.
After we’ve completed your treatment, the IV will be removed but you will still feel the effects of the sedative for several hours after your appointment. You should rest when you get home and have someone monitor you.
You can prepare for IV sedation by not eating or drinking anything for at least eight hours before the procedure. You should also wear loose and comfortable clothing to help you feel more relaxed. Don’t forget to bring a friend with you to drive you to and from the dental procedure before the sedation wears off.
It’s normal for patients to feel a little weird after oral sedation. The after-effects of IV sedation may include drowsiness and a feeling of grogginess. Some patients also report feeling dizzy with headaches. You might also feel nauseous and even vomit or get dry mouth and start to tear up. This should stop once the sedation starts to wear off.
No, numbing before IV sedation is simply unnecessary. There’s no need for numbing because the procedure is minimally invasive. All it involves is sticking a thin needle into a vein and administering the sedative.
However, there are times the dentist might use local anesthesia before sedation. However, this will be to numb the areas to be treated. It has nothing to do with making the patient feel relaxed or the sedation procedure in general.
Dental IV sedation isn’t painful. The process only involves injecting a thin needle into a vein in your arm or hand. Patients will feel a slight pinch but nothing too painful. With the line inside, dentists will administer the medication according to the prescribed dosage.
Patients will start to feel relaxed, light-headed and less anxious about the procedure. However, IV sedation alone isn’t enough to eliminate pain. Dentists will still administer local anesthetic to numb the affected areas. The anesthesia works with the sedation to ensure a smooth and painless procedure.
The dentist will first review your medical history to confirm your eligibility. They’ll then check your vitals, specifically heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels throughout. The dentist then inserts the intravenous line into one of the veins in your hands or arms. The dentist then administers the sedative directly to your bloodstream.
Patients remain conscious throughout the procedure but in a state of light-headedness. They’ll still be able to respond to instructions but will have no recollection of what happened afterward.
Patients remain fully awake during IV sedation but not in their normal state. IV sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream, putting the patient into twilight sleep. Twilight sleep is a state where the patient is conscious but unaware of his surroundings.
Twilight sleep reduces sensitivity to pain, eliminates anxiety, and induces memory loss. Patients “wake up” with no recollection of the procedure but a funny feeling in their mouths. IV sedation can take up 48 hours to wear off completely.
