Fluoride treatments are usually done as part of a six-month cleaning. Dr. Luminais will apply a thin layer of fluoride-rich varnish to your teeth. Then, they will wash it away after a few minutes. Fluoride helps attract minerals to your teeth, which strengthens them and helps prevent or even reverse tooth decay.
Dental sealants are thin layers of plastic resin which are usually applied to the rear teeth. This resin is applied in a liquid form to your teeth. Then, Dr. Luminais will use a UV light to harden the resin, which turns into a clear, seamless barrier that covers your rear teeth. This prevents your teeth from contacting food particles, oral bacteria, and acid directly. In turn, this helps prevent cavities for up to 5-10 years.
We offer a full range of periodontal care options for patients with gum disease. The first step in gum disease treatment is typically a deep cleaning, also called “scaling and root planing.” In this procedure, Dr. Luminais will use special tools to clean deeply between your gums and teeth. They will also smooth out gum “pockets” below your teeth where bacteria tend to collect. Along with good at-home oral hygiene, antibiotics, and future periodontal care from our team, deep cleaning can reverse or halt the progression of gum disease.
We screen for oral cancer as part of every appointment at our office. Dr. Luminais will look for lesions, bumps, and other abnormalities in your mouth. Oral cancer is very rare, but it’s important to catch it early. Treatments for oral cancer are much more effective when it’s discovered in the early stages. Getting an oral cancer screening as part of your routine exam gives you peace of mind, especially if you have a higher risk of cancer due to past tobacco use or other factors.
If you’re a new patient, we’ll take x-rays of your mouth first. X-rays let Dr. Keith Luminais look below the surface of your teeth for hidden oral health issues, past dental work, and more.
Your dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, polish them with a special buffing tool, then floss to remove any remaining debris. This leaves your teeth looking sleek, shiny, and clean.
After your cleaning, Dr. Luminais will examine your mouth. They will look for signs of gum disease, cavities, teeth grinding, and other common oral health conditions, and assess your overall oral health.
Once your exam is done, your dentist will discuss his results with you. If you need any follow-ups like fillings, you can schedule them right away. But if you’ve got a clean bill of health, you’ll be sent home after you schedule your next 6-month visit to Brightly Dental.
